Monday Musings is a little experiment of mine. Every Monday, I’ll be sharing a different prosetry (prose + poetry) piece—or a musing as I’m choosing to call them. I’ve started playing around with this style in an effort to diversify my writing and I’d love feedback from all of my friends here on Substack.
Here’s to trying new things!
The following piece is dedicated to all the wavy/curly haired girls who were led to believe that only straight hair is beautiful.
Perhaps, wavy hair I used to think my hair was wild. As if it were an animal in need of taming. But, perhaps, I misunderstood, misheard, misread it. Perhaps, it was never wild. Perhaps, its brown strands have always held the texture of ocean waves. Those that float carelessly, chasing after the salty air. No preoccupations, just movement—forward, toward the shore. Perhaps, the shape it takes when it drapes down my back is that of ripples. A river running unreservedly, dancing only to the song of the current. Curling around the bend, not surprised by surprises. Perhaps, its undulation mimics that of feathers on wings in mid-flight, piercing the black ink night. Brushing against the twinkle of stars. Perhaps, it just is and there lies its simple beauty. Perhaps, that is why my husband dotes on it when it dries to the whims of the wind. He likes it better that way. Suits me most, he says. Perhaps, because it shows me—not wild—free. - r.e.g.
Did you enjoy this piece? Let me know your thoughts! Also, what do we think about the audio? Why is it that recording yourself reading something feels like the most embarrassing thing ever? Can anyone relate?

Two notes: This is was beautiful, and your hair is beautiful, Rosa. I hope you’ve learned to love your waves because they are gorgeous. 💕
Please keep writing these prosetry pieces! They are delightful.
I loved this! I wrote a poem a while back called "Before I loved my curls". For many years I thought I just had extremely frizzy hair. Now when I air dry I have ringlets. It's almost as if my hair needed to feel safe to curl before it finally did. <3
